The usage of eyelets/grommets is the traditional method to provide fixation points on textiles/nonwoven etc. Eyelets in traditional construction (riveted in metal) gives a strong impression but is often a false sense of security. The eyelet is not stronger than the fabric it is “holding on to” – the same way as a chain is never stronger than its weakest link. As metal eyelets have a small surface it calls for a strong material and most often this is done by folding the fabric. This production process is both expensive and time consuming. Laboratory tests has also shown that when moisture enter the fabric, it is weakened by rot. The result is a known as well as unwanted fact for all users – the eyelets become loose and the fabric gets torn – especially in windy conditions. |
