Polykemi has signed a letter of intent with Sysav (Swedish waste management company) for the future purchase of negative emissions certificates from Sysav’s planned CCUS facility in Malmö. This will allow Polykemi to compensate for emissions that are difficult to eliminate by other means and demonstrates how regional industries can collaborate in climate efforts.

Sysav is planning to implement CCUS technology (Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage) at the waste-to-energy plant in Malmö, with the goal of having a facility operational by 2030. Once in operation, the plant is expected to capture around 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. When biogenic carbon dioxide is then permanently stored underground, it results in negative emissions.

The future CCUS facility is expected to play a key regional role by offering climate-saving solutions to municipalities, companies, and organizations committed to reducing their climate impact. Sysav aims to make an investment decision for a full-scale facility by 2027.

“Together with Polykemi, we’re showing that it’s possible to combine industrial growth with ambitious climate goals. This letter of intent is an excellent example of how regional collaboration can drive real change,” says Malin Dahlroth, CEO of Sysav. “It also confirms that our product will meet the highest standards for climate compensation.”

“Our partnership with Sysav is a significant step in our sustainability journey, taking responsibility for emissions we cannot eliminate in our production. By purchasing negative emissions, we ensure that our climate impact is minimized, even in areas where we don’t yet have technical solutions,” says Jörgen Andersson, Chief Quality & Environmental Officer at Polykemi. “This is a key part of our commitment to driving more sustainable development in the plastics industry.”

Ystad Summit – Seminar on CCUS

During Ystad Summit (a sustainability conference in southern Sweden), Sysav will host a seminar focused on largest climate initiative in Skåne (Sweden’s southernmost region) and how CCUS can help Sweden achieve its climate targets by 2045. Speakers will include Magnus Pettersson, CEO of Sysav Development, and Henrik Palokangas, Sustainability Specialist at Polykemi, who will share insights on how industry can integrate CCUS into its sustainability efforts. Together with other regional experts, they will explore how collaboration can transform a major emissions source into a climate solution driver and accelerate the transition in both Skåne and Sweden.

Facts about CCUS

CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage) involves capturing carbon dioxide and converting it into liquid form through pressure and low temperatures. It can then either be safely stored in bedrock beneath the ground or seabed, or used as a raw material in other processes, such as fuel production.

When carbon dioxide of biogenic origin is permanently stored, it creates negative emissions (also referred to as "permanent removals"), which can be used by stakeholders looking to compensate for emissions that cannot be reduced otherwise or cost-effectively, in order to reach net-zero emissions. A market for CDR (Carbon Dioxide Removal) certificates is currently emerging.
